Ambushes are a type of Random Encounter in Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online wherein NPCs make a false request for the player's help then spring an attack, or attack the player when they enter a territory where such enemies are based (for example, in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online, Lemoyne Raiders will ambush the player when they are in Lemoyne). Specific ambush encounters are covered in detail on the Random Encounters page, via the links below:
- The Beauty and the Wagon - a woman by a disabled Stagecoach requests help, while bandits lie in wait.
- In Need of a Ride - an individual requests a ride, then steals the player's horse.
- Lemoyne Raider Assault - 8 or more mounted Lemoyne Raiders show up without warning and open fire on you all at once. They may use a Maxim Gun, making this encounter extremely difficult to win for newer players.
Red Dead Redemption 2[]
In Red Dead Redemption 2, as a player gradually explores the map more and comes into contact with more kinds of enemies, they may be ambushed frequently when in their territory. There are numerous hot spots in which an ambush may occur, and the ambushes will be much harder to combat in more high level areas.
Red Dead Online[]
In Red Dead Online, an ambush will work similarly to the ones present in single player (Red Dead Redemption 2) but will be less harmful and strong. They will, however, use similar tactics, for example rolling a carriage into a road to trap a player. It is often useful to try to loot the ambushing enemies, as they can yield ammunition, valuables and even maps.
