American Army Captain

The American Army Captain is a character in Red Dead Redemption.

Background[]

Nothing is known about the Captain's background, apart from his rank and that he is from a US Army cavalry unit. However, he has been sent to help deal with the undead invasion.

Interactions[]

The Captain is only seen in the mission "American Imperialism". He was ordered to take a train and a team of soldiers south into Mexico, officially to assist the Mexican people with the undead plague. Unofficially, he sees it as an opportunity to escape the undead in America and for the team to steal whatever they can while in Mexico. After John Marston acquires a US Army Uniform from a group of soldiers who deserted and fled to the Scratching Post, he finds the Captain at Benedict Point. The Captain had stopped the train while waiting for more soldiers to arrive, but came under attack by an undead horde.

After being saved with his team by Marston, and deciding no more reinforcements were coming, the Captain starts the train and heads for the US-Mexico border. More undead arrive and pursue the train, forcing the Captain, Marston and the team to fight them off. Upon reaching the border, the group finds the Frontera Bridge has been blocked with debris. The Captain stops the train and orders the team to clear it, but the horde of undead that pursued them from Benedict Point catches up with the train. As the horde passes the front of the train he orders some of his men to start firing at the undead, while the rest of the team continues clearing the debris. After his entire team breaks and runs, he calls them cowards before declaring the mission "suicide" and that it is "every man for himself" before fleeing, leaving Marston alone to face the undead. His fate after this is unknown.

Trivia[]

  • He has a similar rank and strikingly similar appearance to the American Army Captain and Jan Booth, though his mustache is longer.
  • During cutscenes, he is equipped with a Schofield Revolver. However, outside of them he uses a Cattleman Revolver.
  • When the player first boards the train, the Captain's conversation with Marston will be about going to Mexico. However, if the player dies or otherwise fails the mission, the dialogue between the Captain and Marston will change to what Army unit Marston is from, which turns into a discussion about Dutch's death after Marston lies and says he is from a unit based in Tall Trees.
  • He will sometimes throw Fire Bottles at the undead while on the train.
  • He is quite possibly a career officer since he leaves his men to do most of the fighting and work, and acts somewhat cowardly when fighting alongside his men during their suicidal last stand.
  • It is possible for the Captain to die during the last stand. If the undead get too close to the player and the other soldiers, the undead will attack both Marston and the rest of the soldiers, including the Captain.
    • During the last stand, the Captain can take an unusually large amount of hits from the undead, being able to potentially survive up to fifteen or even twenty hits before dying.
