Drinking is an activity that plays an important social function in the American West, in which the Red Dead series takes place.

Red Dead Redemption[]

Players can buy a drink at their local saloon for two dollars. However, depending on the player's decision during the stranger side-mission "The Prohibitionist," this price can change in to either four dollars or one dollar. Furthermore, if John or Jack has obtained the fame rank of "Gunslinger", drinks will be free of charge at any bar, no matter the player's decision in "The Prohibitionist."

Alcoholic drinks, such as whiskey and bourbon, are more popular in the United States territories, while tequila is more popular in Mexico. After the player drinks five or six times in a row, Marston will begin to stumble while walking, and falls very easily during a period of time. Sporadically, Marston gets blackouts, falling to the ground and lying still for some time. If Marston returns to the bar immediately after sobering up, it may take fewer drinks to get drunk once more. While drunk, the player must take caution, as it is very easy to upset a patron and get invited to a duel.

It should be noted that the sobering-up period can vary drastically from instance to instance. Marston may fall over once and then get back up sober, or it may take him more than a few minutes. It can take as little as ten seconds or as long as five minutes. Whether or not this depends on any certain factors is still unclear.

Red Dead Redemption 2[]

A drunkard's guide to drunkenness

The act of drinking is greatly expanded upon in Red Dead Redemption 2. At any saloon, the player can purchase a bottle of beer or a shot of whiskey (which is typically more expensive than the former). Prices vary depending on the saloon. Players can also carry bottled beverages, found across the map and in local stores, in their satchel to consume at their leisure. This includes aged pirate rum, moonshine, gin, Guarma rum, fine brandy, and Kentucky Bourbon. If the player wishes, they can also find crates of beer at the gang's camp, behind Simon Pearson's chuckwagon.

Like its predecessor, if the player drinks excessively, they will eventually become intoxicated. This will cast a filter on the player's screen to mimic the feeling of intoxication. Along with this, the player will walk drunkenly, and their dialogue with strangers and NPC's will be affected. If the player drinks too much, they may black out and wake up a few hours later. It should be noted that different beverages carry varying amounts of alcohol; drinks like beer will take the slowest to intoxicate the player, while aged pirate rum can automatically initiate drunkenness.

Trivia[]

Red Dead Redemption[]

  • If the player is wearing the Bandana, whoever the bartender is, he will refuse to serve the player.
  • To keep from falling, the player can tap A (Xbox 360), X (PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4), or B (Nintendo Switch) repeatedly. However, this will not stop Marston from eventually blacking out.
  • When using the "Hic" cheat, Marston will remain drunk until the cheat is deactivated.
    • If Marston has his weapon drawn before ordering a drink, he will draw it immediately after the player finishes drinking, even if he is drunk. This may cause other patrons to draw their weapons as a precaution.
    • While his weapon is drawn in this state. Marston can enter Dead Eye Targeting, even though he is unable to aim or shoot while he is drunk
  • Different spirits are requested randomly, and vary depending on whether Marston is in the USA or Mexico. Regardless, bartenders always serve a nondescript bottle of brown liquor.
    • Rum and brandy can be requested in both countries.
    • Whiskey, bourbon and gin are only ever requested in the USA.
    • Tequila and pulque only appear available in Mexico.

Red Dead Redemption 2[]

  • In saloons, beer always costs $0.50, but whiskey sometimes costs $1.
  • Drinking interferes with the PS4 controls when the player is attacking a witness. Instead of the default punch button, the button for punch is R2 while drunk.
