Train Robbery is the act of boarding or stopping a train with the intention of removing valuables from it. Train robberies play a central role in several story missions in the Red Dead series.

Red Dead Revolver[]

Red Dead Redemption[]

Train robberies are not supported in single player outside of specific missions, and in multiplayer are impossible due to trains not being present.

The closest thing to a train robbery outside of missions in the game is the murder of a trains passengers and then looting their corpses. The only time the player participates in a actual train robbery is in "The Great Mexican Train Robbery", however they have to defend trains from being robbed in "Civilization, at Any Price", "Mexican Caesar", and can stop a train robbery in "By Sweat and Toil".

Red Dead Redemption 2[]

Train robberies appear in Red Dead Redemption 2, and are now able to be carried out at any time outside of a mission in Story mode, and they are also the focus of missions in both Story mode and Red Dead Online. Completing a train robbery outside of a mission is a requirement for 100% completion of the game.

Trains can be robbed by either robbing the passengers or the baggage car at the rear of a train, however unlike Red Dead Redemption trains now carry guards, who are usually at the front and rear of the train. Commencing a robbery, however, almost immediately triggers a wanted level. There are also some cargo cars with safes in them. You can use dynamite or explosive ammo to blow up the safes. There can be money stacks, pocket watches, bill folds, and valuables. To receive better payout, rob the passengers in the upper class cars (you can tell by fancy decor). If you want to prolong the time the lawmen take to arrive, it is recommended to board a train from or to Annesburg, equip the bandana and stop the train in the middle of one of the long mountain tunnels in Ambarino. This way the lawmen will not spawn in the area since the suspect will not be identified, giving you plenty of time to rob everything.

The player can also randomly encounter trains being robbed by rival gangs in the world, usually by the Del Lobo Gang, Lemoyne Raiders, or O'Driscoll Boys.

Trivia[]

Red Dead Revolver
  • The first train robbery in the series is in Red Dead Revolver in Chapter 4/5 during the mission "The Traincar".
Red Dead Redemption
  • Stopping the train on the long section of track across the cliff face near Bearclaw Camp will make robbing the train while stationary possible, as the passengers will have no where to run.
  • Promotional material said players would be able to take part in train robberies to earn considerable amounts of money, but the player can only rob a train once in the whole game.
